The Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), European Lead Factory a major pan-European project which has recently started. The project was established with the aim of generating new lead chemical structures as a basis for drug discovery projects in the public and private sectors. The European Screening Centre (ESC) has been established as part of the mentioned project. The cornerstone of the ESC is the Pivot Park Screening Centre (Oss, The Netherlands). This unit is responsible for assay development and High Throughput Screening (HTS) for the whole ESC. The expected final output of the European Lead Factory project is a refined set of high quality hits, which represent an excellent starting point for multiple drug discovery/development programs. In addition, we expect to generate novel tools for investigating and validating new pharmacological approaches.

The ultimate goal is to consolidate an open innovation approach in which academic centres, pharmaceutical companies and small-medium enterprises closely collaborate for the benefit of patients in diverse disease areas.

Job Description

The PPSC is searching for a High Throughput Screening / Lab Automation Specialist who will become part of the specialist team. The team has the responsibility for two sophisticated High Throughput Screening (HTS) systems. These systems are routinely used to test large compound collections in order to find starting points for drug discovery. The descriptions at will give you an impression about the systems and its capabilities. Beside the ownership over the systems the specialists will support scientists from the assay development team in their automation work.

Main duties and responsibilities:

The specialist team has the ownership over the instrumentation, which brings tasks like:
- Keeping systems in good shape by regular end user maintenance
- Contacts  with suppliers and technicians
- Validation and verification of instrumentation
- Programming systems and instruments
- Data processing of screening results (QC data evaluation tools (based on Pipe Line Pilot, normalisation of data, data processing (Activity Base XE)

The specialist team supports the assay developers in for example:
- Optimizing biochemical and cellular assays for screening
- Transfer of assays to robotic systems
- Data processing and IT support

In close collaboration specialists and assay developers will perform screening campaigns, cherry picking and active confirmation on the robotic systems.

Call Out Duty:

Screens are performed in 24 hour runs and specialists will be on duty to resolve run time errors outside working hours (by remote connection and onsite visits). As a result the specialist should have an acceptable (maximal half an hour) travelling time from home to work.

Function requirements and candidate profile:

We would like to complete the team with somebody bringing 3 to 5 years experience.

At least:
- HLO Bachelor
- Education, chemistry or biology
- Lab automation experience or at least proven skills in that area.
- Willing to invest in learning curves (see plusses)
- Good communication skills, in Dutch and English, a team spirit, sense of responsibility and being able to collaborate with colleagues and customers.

- Knowledge about chemical structures, preferable a focus on drug like structures
- Affinity with biochemical and/or cellular assay technologies
- Experience in life science automation (robotic systems, data processing biological assays)
- In-depth knowledge of general IT (like Windows, MS office)
- Experience in maintaining and repairing instruments
- Experience in compound (high throughput) screening
- Programming skills
- Data processing and data mining experience

The successful candidate will report to the Screening Manager.
